living and this is the next priority. Providing accommodations that allow one to bath themselves helps them keep their dignity and independence. Bath tubs are dangerous due to difficulties with entry/exit and slippery wet surfaces. Walk-in and roll-in barrier-free showers are the safest and easiest to use and are highly recommended. Due to water flow and proper water protection it is necessary to remove existing bath walls and flooring to lower drains and install water-protection materials. New showers can be built using water-proof drywall and ceramic tile or pre-fabricated fiberglass units. Grab bars will need to be installed and adjustable hand-held shower heads are very helpful and easy to use since they can be adjusted to the user's height. If a major bathroom remodel is not affordable or if there are space limitations then bath transfer seats or bathtubs with door openings are viable alternatives. An accessible vanity and/or sink is another area that will need modification especially if the user is in a wheelchair. An ADA approved 18" commode can be installed and some companies manufacture 3" thick commodes seats to accomplish the same height requirement. See our section on bathrooms for more information.
